According to Forbes.com, the most popular sports teams in America are the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. Licensed Yankees merchandise accounts for one third of all licensed MLB sales and the combined value of the Yankees' + Cowboys' brand had been estimated at $6.4 billion.
This amazingly disproportionate statistic got me thinking…if I had to name just one team as my favorite, which would it be? The Yankees? Dallas Cowboys? Boston Celtics? Danica Patrick? Serena Williams? Tiger Woods?
But, who are the New York Yankees? The Cowboys? Did I have breakfast with them this morning? When I cheered the loudest for Derek Jeter, did he give me a glowing smile? How about Danica Patrick? Did she search feverishly to catch a glimpse of me in the stands after every turn? When was the last time Tiger Woods asked my advice on, say, which club to use? Did I ever clean up Tony Romo’s bruises and read him a bed time story?
A few years ago my son Drew came home from a birthday party holding a sticker with his name on it. He gave me the sticker and I stuck it on my hat. For the next few months, I wore my 'Drew hat' everywhere. People asked me, "why are you wearing Drew’s name on your hat?"
I answered, “because Drew plays on my favorite team.”
