In the lecture series of The Great Courses titled The Addictive Brain, Professor Thad Polk, Ph.D. provides a staggering statistic: Approximately 80 million Americans suffer from addiction in some form. Professor Polk’s sweeping lectures explain how toxic external environments can enable different forms of addiction – many of which, 'experts' have yet to understand, or even study.
Dr. Polk, explains how "addiction is characterized by abuse, dependency, and by craving," and the consumed substance does not have to be a drug, such as alcohol, or heroin.
To exemplify the viral nature of addiction, Dr. Polk devotes an entire lecture to gambling, (chapter 11), and other lectures on the topic of behavioral or process addictions, which include, but are not limited to video games, junk food, and pornography. (Chapter 12.)
Regardless of the addict's stimulant of pleasure, the necessary condition for any form of addiction is an insatiable demand for MORE consumption.
It is time to face some difficult truths.
The so-called health of modern society is based upon the same condition that enables all forms of addiction: MORE CONSUMPTION.
The first step to curing an evil is to make it known: We are a collective group of consumption ADDICTS who deny the truth of our addiction - and will stop at no ends to engineer our fix.
It is time for a major intervention. I volunteer. With my book, Twists, Turns, and Yellow Brick Roads, I invite you to my meeting.
